Croatia

Sometimes I spend a whole week seeing the most amazing places and listening to so many unique stories… that I end up coming home with only a handful, or in this case, one good portrait. That’s the beauty of getting distracted I guess.

Coffee and Newspapers

Everything in Zadar is seasonal. It’s all guided by tourism. He and his wife own a small cafe together. A long glass showcase is filled with carefully decorated cakes and pastries, ranging in different colors and flavors. The couple crafts them in a small kitchen behind the counter to present them to wedding planners and other event organizers. I asked what it is like to live in a city where the ocean is always only a 5-minute walk away, wherever you are. „We don’t see a lot of it. During the on-season, we work all day, every day. In Croatia, it is necessary to build a cushion to make it through the months without tourism here“. Both used to be Journalists. They wrote for small local newspapers and acted as photographers as well. Slowly they moved towards wedding photography since it was by far the more prolific direction. The couple had a love for baking, which was a craft easily combined with their full-time job.

After we talked for a good while about him and Zadar, I asked if there was a good place to eat nearby. He grinned and told me there was a seafood restaurant around the corner owned by an old colleague of his. They had not seen each other in months since both are too busy with work. So he sent me off with a message of kind regards to a good friend.
